Marrakech Airport Car Rental (RAK): The Complete 2026 Guide

By Abdelmounaim el ainaoui Published 6 min read

Landing in Marrakech and want to drive off straight away — no taxi haggling, no queue at a rental desk? That is exactly what a well-prepared car rental at Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) gives you. The airport is only about 6 km from Jemaa el-Fna square, so you can be at your riad or hotel 15 to 20 minutes after you collect the keys.

We hand over cars at Menara all year round. This guide explains, step by step, how pick-up actually works, what to bring and how to avoid the usual surprises.

Quick answers

  • Your agent waits in the arrivals hall, after customs, holding a sign with your name.
  • Bring your driving license (held for 2+ years), your passport and a credit card for the deposit.
  • The check-in of the car and the contract take about 15–20 minutes.
  • Book ahead: in high season, automatic cars are the first to go.

Why pick up your rental car at the airport?

You skip the taxi. Airport taxis to the Medina are negotiated, and prices for tourists tend to climb at night. With a car waiting for you, that ride is already sorted.

You save half a day. If your trip starts with Essaouira, the Ourika valley or the road to the desert, you can leave directly without going through central Marrakech first.

Return is just as easy. On departure day you drop the car in front of the terminal and walk to check-in — no need to find a taxi at 5 a.m.

Most local agencies, Oum Loca Car included, do not have a desk inside the terminal. Instead, an agent meets you personally with the car, which usually means no queue at all.

How car pick-up works at Menara Airport

1. Before you fly: share your flight number

When you book, give your flight number and expected arrival time. The agency can then follow any delay and be there when you actually land. If your plans change, send a WhatsApp message — it is by far the quickest way to reach anyone in Morocco.

2. On arrival: passport control, luggage, arrivals hall

Passport control can take anything from 10 minutes to more than an hour at peak times. Don't worry about being late: your agent waits at the exit of the arrivals hall with a name sign. Terminals 1 and 2 are next to each other and the agent will meet you at the right one.

3. In the car park: inspection and contract

The agent walks you to the car in the car park facing the terminals. This is the step that matters most:

  • walk around the car together and make sure every scratch is noted on the contract;
  • film the bodywork, wheels and interior on your phone;
  • check the spare wheel, the jack and the fuel level;
  • make sure the registration document and insurance certificate are in the glovebox.

You then sign the contract, the deposit is blocked on your credit card and the keys are yours. Allow 15–20 minutes in total.

Documents you need

Document Details
Driving license Original, held for at least 2 years. UK, EU, US and Canadian licenses are accepted. UK drivers should bring the photocard.
ID Passport for foreign visitors, national ID card for Moroccan residents.
Credit card Visa or MasterCard in the main driver's name, for the security deposit.
Age Main driver at least 21 years old.
Second driver Same documents. At Oum Loca Car the second driver is free.

An International Driving Permit is not usually required by rental agencies for tourists, but it can help at a police check if your license is not written in Latin characters.

How much does car rental at Marrakech airport cost?

Three things drive the price: season, car category and rental length.

  • Low season (November to mid-December, January–February outside school holidays, June): prices are at their lowest and small city cars such as the Kia Picanto or Fiat 500 are very affordable.
  • High season (Easter, July–August, Christmas and New Year): prices rise and availability drops, especially for automatics and 7-seaters.
  • Length: the daily rate usually drops for rentals of a week or more.

When you compare two offers, compare the total price: airport delivery, mileage, second driver, deposit amount and insurance excess. With us, airport delivery and collection, unlimited mileage and the second driver are included. For the details, read our guide to car rental insurance and deposits in Morocco.

Which car should you choose?

  • Marrakech and nearby (Agafay, Ourika, Lalla Takerkoust lake): a small car is enough and much easier to park near the Medina.
  • Stress-free driving: a Renault Clio 5 automatic, ideal if you are used to automatics or dense traffic worries you.
  • Atlas mountains, desert, long drives: an SUV such as the Dacia Duster or Hyundai Tucson for comfort and ground clearance.
  • Families and groups: the 7-seat Dacia Jogger.

You can see every car and its daily rate on our Marrakech rental cars page.

From the airport to the Medina: your first kilometres

The drive from Menara to the centre is straightforward: wide, well-signposted avenues lead to Hivernage, Gueliz and the Medina. A few tips:

  • Set your GPS before leaving the car park. Google Maps and Waze work well in Marrakech; download the offline map just in case.
  • Watch out for scooters. They filter everywhere, including on your right. Check your mirrors every time you turn.
  • You cannot drive into the Medina. Ask your riad for the nearest car park; an attendant (gardien) will watch your car for a small fee. Always agree the price first.
  • Roundabouts are frequent and busy. Drive calmly and predictably.

Returning the car at the airport

On departure day, aim to be at the airport at least 2.5 hours before an international flight. Agree the meeting point with the agency in advance (usually the car park in front of the departures terminal). The agent checks the car and the fuel level, then your deposit is released.

Fill up at a petrol station close to the airport: returning the car with less fuel than at pick-up will be charged.

Frequently asked questions

Should I book my car before arriving in Marrakech?

Yes. Booking ahead guarantees availability (especially in high season and for automatics), lets you compare conditions calmly and spares you a negotiation when you are tired off the plane.

What if my flight is delayed?

If you have shared your flight number, the agency adapts to your real arrival time. For a long delay or a cancellation, send a WhatsApp message as soon as you can.

Can I collect the car at the airport and return it in town?

Yes, by prior arrangement: airport, hotel, riad or train station. Just give us your pick-up and return places when you book.

Is the security deposit compulsory?

Yes. It is blocked on your credit card when you collect the car and released when you return it. The amount depends on the car category and we tell you before you book.
