Car Rental Insurance and Deposits in Morocco, Explained Simply

By Abdelmounaim el ainaoui Published 5 min read

"How big is the deposit?", "What exactly am I covered for?", "When do I get my money back?" These are the three questions customers ask us most before renting a car in Marrakech — and the points where too-good-to-be-true offers hide their surprises.

Here is how the deposit and the insurance work when you rent a car in Morocco, without jargon, using our real rental conditions as an example.

In short

  • The deposit is blocked (not charged) on your credit card and released when you return the car.
  • At Oum Loca Car it ranges from €1,000 to €3,000 depending on the car category.
  • Included insurance covers third-party liability, theft, fire, glass breakage and passenger accident cover.
  • If the car is damaged, an excess is payable by the driver; optional protection reduces it.
  • Tyres are not covered.

What is the security deposit?

The deposit is an amount held on your credit card when you collect the car. It guarantees that the agency can cover any costs: damage, missing fuel, a traffic fine, a very late return.

What you need to know:

  • It is not a payment. The money is not taken: it is reserved against your card limit (a pre-authorisation).
  • It is released when you return the car in the same condition and with the same fuel level.
  • How fast it reappears depends on your bank. The agency cancels the pre-authorisation on the day you return the car, but some banks take several days to show the funds again.

How much should you expect?

With us, the amount depends on the category: from €1,000 for small city cars to €3,000 for premium SUVs. We confirm the exact amount for your car before you book.

The most useful tip in this article: check your card limit before you travel. A €1,500 deposit can freeze a card with a €2,000 limit for your entire trip. Ask your bank for a temporary increase if needed.

Credit card, debit card or cash?

We accept Visa and MasterCard for the deposit. The rental itself can be paid in cash (euros or dirhams), by card (4% card fee), online or by bank transfer.

What the insurance covers

In Morocco, third-party liability (damage you cause to others) is compulsory and always included. At Oum Loca Car every car is also insured against:

Cover Included
Third-party liability Yes
Theft of the vehicle Yes
Fire Yes
Glass breakage Yes
Passenger personal accident cover Yes
Tyres No
Damage to the rental car Yes, with an excess payable by the driver

The excess: the most important line in the contract

The excess is the amount you pay if the car is damaged, whether or not the accident was your fault. It is often what makes the real difference between two offers.

Example: if your category's excess is €1,000 and a repair costs €600, you pay €600. If the repair costs €3,000, you pay €1,000 and the insurance covers the rest.

Reducing your excess: optional protection plans

Each car page on our website lists optional protection plans that reduce the excess for a daily supplement. They are worth it if:

  • you are planning long drives (Sahara, Atlas, Essaouira);
  • you rent a category with a higher excess (SUVs);
  • you simply want peace of mind and no surprises at return.

The 4 situations where the deposit is used

  1. Damage found at return that was not noted at pick-up (which is why the pick-up video matters).
  2. Missing fuel: the car must come back with the same level as at pick-up.
  3. A traffic fine received during the rental.
  4. An accident without a report: if an accident is not declared with a police or gendarmerie report handed over within 24 hours, the insurance cannot step in and repairs are charged to you.

How to get your deposit back without any discussion

  • Film the car at pick-up: bodywork, wheels, windscreen, interior, odometer and fuel gauge. Two minutes that prevent any dispute.
  • Make sure every scratch is noted on the contract before you sign.
  • Return the car with the same fuel level and keep your last fuel receipt.
  • After any bump, however small, call the agency immediately and get a report.
  • Film the car again at return, in front of the agent.

Beware of cheap "no deposit" or "zero excess" offers

A car advertised at a rock-bottom price "with no deposit" often hides a high excess, a car in poor condition or fees charged on the spot. A serious agency tells you the deposit, the excess and what the insurance covers before you book. If it is not clear, ask for it in writing. We cover the other traps in our guide to cheap car rental in Marrakech.

Frequently asked questions

Is the deposit taken from my account?

No. It is held (pre-authorised) and then released when you return the car, as long as there is no damage or other cost. Only an amount matching real costs can be charged.

Can I pay the deposit in cash?

The deposit is taken on a Visa or MasterCard. If your situation is different, contact us and we will look for a solution with you.

Does the insurance cover punctures?

No, tyres are not covered. If you get a puncture, use the spare wheel or call assistance; repairing or replacing the tyre is at your expense.

Does my credit card already insure me?

Some premium cards include car rental insurance that reimburses the excess. Check the conditions with your bank before you travel: covered countries, vehicle types and the claims procedure.
