Driving from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga is arguably the best road trip in Morocco: the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges, then the Sahara. It is also much easier than people expect — the road is paved all the way.
This is the route we recommend to customers setting off from Marrakech, with distances, realistic driving times and practical advice.
At a glance
- Marrakech to Merzouga: about 560 km on the most direct route.
- Pure driving time: 9 to 10 hours, best split over at least 2 days on the way out.
- Ideal trip length: 4 days / 3 nights (3 days minimum, at a brisk pace).
- Recommended car: an SUV such as the Dacia Duster for comfort; you do not need a 4x4.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate (≈ 200 km, 4.5 hours of driving)
Leave early, ideally before 8 a.m., to cross the High Atlas in good light and ahead of the lorries.
- The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) is the highlight of the morning. The N9 is wide and well maintained but very winding: allow about 2.5 hours from Marrakech to the pass. Stop only at proper viewpoints, never on a bend.
- Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified village, is about 30 km before Ouarzazate along a well-signposted side road. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours there.
- Overnight in Ouarzazate, or in Ait Ben Haddou itself for a quieter evening.
Day 2: Ouarzazate → Dades valley → Todra gorge → Merzouga (≈ 360 km, 6 hours of driving)
This is the big driving day. If you have 4 days, split it with a night in the Dades valley.
- The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs runs through Skoura and Kelaat M'Gouna, the valley of roses.
- The Dades gorge: from Boumalne Dades, drive about 30 km up the valley to the famous Tissadrine switchbacks. The road is narrow — go slowly and sound your horn before blind bends.
- The Todra gorge, around 15 km from Tinghir: towering cliffs and a walk along the bottom of the gorge.
- Then on through Tinejdad, Erfoud and Rissani to reach Merzouga in the late afternoon, right at the foot of the dunes.
Day 3: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
Leave the car at your hotel or camp car park. Sunrise over the dunes, a camel ride, the village of Khamlia and its Gnaoua musicians: take your time. A night in a desert camp is an experience not to miss.
Day 4: back towards Marrakech
Two options:
- The same road back via Ouarzazate: about 560 km, a very long day. Better to break the journey in Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou.
- The southern route via Alnif, N'Kob and Agdz (the Draa valley), then Ouarzazate: wilder, different landscapes and far less traffic. Plan an overnight stop.
Distances and driving times
| Leg | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka pass | ≈ 110 km | ≈ 2 h 30 |
| Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou | ≈ 80 km | ≈ 1 h 30 |
| Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate | ≈ 30 km | ≈ 30 min |
| Ouarzazate → Boumalne Dades | ≈ 115 km | ≈ 1 h 45 |
| Boumalne Dades → Tinghir (Todra) | ≈ 55 km | ≈ 1 h |
| Tinghir → Merzouga | ≈ 200 km | ≈ 3 h |
These times do not include photo stops — and there will be plenty.
Which car for the desert?
The whole road to Merzouga is paved, so a 4x4 is not essential. We still recommend an SUV such as the Dacia Duster or Hyundai Tucson for:
- comfort over more than 1,000 km round trip;
- ground clearance on the gravel access roads to hotels and gorges;
- luggage space.
For a family of 5 to 7, the 7-seat Dacia Jogger is a good choice. And with unlimited mileage, you never have to count kilometres.
Important: a rental car is not made for driving on the dunes. Trips into the sand are done by 4x4 with a driver or by camel, organised by your camp.
Practical tips for the road
- Fuel: fill up in Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Boumalne, Tinghir and Erfoud. Between towns stations are scarce: never drop below half a tank.
- Weather: in winter (December to February) the Tizi n'Tichka can get snow and the road may close temporarily. Check the forecast the day before. In summer the south is extremely hot: start early and carry plenty of water.
- Police checks: frequent at town entrances; slow down and keep your papers handy. See our guide to driving in Morocco.
- No mountain driving after dark: do the Tichka road and the gorges in daylight.
- Go offline: download the Google Maps area for the region — mobile coverage is patchy in the gorges.
- Cash: carry dirhams for small purchases, parking and tips.
Self-drive or organised tour?
There are plenty of 3-day minibus tours from Marrakech, but they keep a tight schedule and stop at souvenir shops. With a rental car you choose your stops, pull over wherever you like and sleep wherever you want. For two or more travellers, the cost is often similar — with complete freedom.
Frequently asked questions
Can you drive from Marrakech to Merzouga in one day?
Technically yes (9 to 10 hours of driving), but we advise against it: fatigue, mountain roads and checkpoints make it an exhausting day. Plan at least one overnight stop.
Is the Tizi n'Tichka road dangerous?
No. It has been widened and is well maintained. It is mostly winding: drive carefully, never overtake on bends and avoid it at night or in snow.
What is the best season for this road trip?
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October–November) bring the best temperatures. Winter is beautiful but cold at night in the desert, and summer is very hot.
