Search for "cheap car rental Marrakech" and you will find dozens of offers at a few euros a day. The catch is that the advertised price is rarely the price you pay: airport delivery on top, a fee for the second driver, limited mileage, a huge excess or a deposit blocked for weeks.
As a local agency in Marrakech, we meet travellers every week who paid more for "the cheapest deal". Here are our 10 tips to genuinely pay less.
In short
- Always compare the total price (delivery, drivers, mileage, insurance), not the daily rate.
- Book early for school holidays, Easter, summer and Christmas/New Year.
- A small manual car is the cheapest option.
- Check the deposit, excess and fuel policy before you book.
1. Compare the total price, not the daily rate
A car at €15 a day can end up at €35 a day once you add:
- delivery to the airport or hotel;
- the second driver;
- limited mileage (and charges for extra kilometres);
- card payment fees;
- a "compulsory full tank" charged at a premium.
Always ask for a written quote with the total price for your dates. At Oum Loca Car, delivery and collection (airport, hotel, train station), unlimited mileage and the second driver are included in the price.
2. Book at the right time
Prices and availability follow Marrakech's tourist calendar:
| Period | Demand | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Easter, July–August, Christmas/New Year | Very high | Book 1–2 months ahead |
| European school holidays, May bank holidays | High | Book 3–4 weeks ahead |
| November, January–February (outside holidays), June | Quieter | Best prices, more flexibility |
Automatics and 7-seaters are the first to go in high season.
3. Pick the right size of car
For Marrakech and the surrounding area, a city car such as the Kia Picanto or Fiat 500 is plenty: cheaper to rent, lighter on fuel and much easier to park near the Medina. Only take an SUV if you are heading to the Atlas or the desert.
4. Manual is cheaper
In Morocco most rental cars are manual and automatics cost more. If you are comfortable with a manual gearbox, it is an easy saving. If not, don't take the risk: a Clio 5 automatic makes city driving far more relaxed.
5. Look at the excess, not just "insurance included"
"Insurance included" does not mean "nothing to pay if the car is damaged". What matters is the excess: the amount you still pay. A cheap offer with a high excess can cost you dearly for a simple scratch. Everything is explained in our guide to car rental insurance and deposits in Morocco.
6. Check the deposit amount and your card limit
The deposit is held on your card for the whole rental. With us it ranges from €1,000 to €3,000 depending on the category. Check your card limit before you travel, or you may struggle to pay for your hotels.
7. Understand the fuel policy
The fairest rule is same-to-same: return the car with the same fuel level as at pick-up. Avoid offers that charge a full tank up front without a fair refund for unused fuel.
8. Local agency or international brand?
Big international brands have desks at the airport, but often queues and extras sold at the counter. A good local agency usually offers lower prices, a personal handover and real flexibility (delivery to your riad, flexible hours). The key is to check that it is reliable:
- recent, detailed Google reviews on a real Google Maps listing;
- a physical address and a phone number that answers;
- clear written answers on the deposit, excess and total price;
- a signed rental contract and a car with valid registration and insurance papers.
9. Don't pay everything upfront to a stranger
A reasonable deposit to secure a car in high season is normal. Paying 100% upfront by bank transfer to an agency with no Google listing, no address and no contract is a risk. Prefer an agency that lets you pay the balance when you collect the car.
10. Protect yourself at pick-up
The best way to avoid charges at return never changes: film the car from every angle at pick-up, make sure every scratch is on the contract and check the spare wheel. Two minutes that can save you hundreds of euros.
How much does car rental in Marrakech cost?
Prices vary with the season and the category, but as a rule of thumb: a city car is the most affordable option, a compact SUV costs noticeably more, and premium SUVs like the Range Rover Evoque or Volkswagen Touareg sit in a different price bracket. For current daily rates, see our Marrakech fleet: the price is shown on each car page and calculated automatically for your dates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest car to rent in Marrakech?
Small manual city cars such as the Kia Picanto or Fiat 500 are the cheapest to rent and to run.
Is it cheaper to rent at the airport or in town?
With an agency that delivers for free, the price is the same. With companies that charge for delivery, renting in town can look cheaper — until you add the taxi from the airport. See our Marrakech airport car rental guide.
Can I negotiate the price?
For longer rentals (a week or more) and in low season, ask for a quote: daily rates usually drop with longer rentals.
